Narrative Pieces

   The Rooster (1943)

Swirls of blue, black, and gray across the sky
The night's air brisk and uninviting
The rooster is hidden in the coop
desperate to escape the bites of the wind
The wind whistles gently as it makes its way through holes in the coop
No animal can be seen
All are concealed in their various barns and stables
When the sun comes out, the animals will too
For now, they wait for the sun to come up
For now, they wait for the rooster's call.

Portrait of Olga in an Armchair (1917)

Minutes seem like hours, hours like days
Picasso carefully selects his template of colors
Olga, sitting patiently in her chair
Looking pale, tired, but absolutely stunning
Taking breaks was common
Olga's arm grew tired
Picasso's template covered in a multitude of colors
Browns, reds, black, white, yellows, and greens
When Picasso was finished, he was tired
So tired, in fact, he could not think of a clever name for the painting.

  1. These paintings are quite different--shows what a range Picasso had. I like how you approached the Olga piece, writing about the process of its creation.
