My Final Reflection

1.    List/discuss several of the different pieces of writing you've done this quarter, including posts, comments, creative pieces, journals, in-class writings, and things you've written on your own.

1.    When I think of different pieces of writing that I have done in the past quarter, the first piece that my mind jumped to was my scary-story writing we did around Halloween. My story is calledThe Secrets of a Psychopath.” It is inspired from a picture of a man and a woman standing in front of a door with a body hanging on the wall in the background. I was proud of this piece of writing because I think it wrote itself. I loved unraveling the story and it was almost as though I was reading it and not writing it. I could picture everything happening in my head, and it was just putting it down on paper. This piece made me excited to show people, and I probably got a lot of views by telling people to go read this particular post.

2.    Another activity I loved doing (and maybe went overboard on) was our entry in our journal about giving physical characteristics to non-physical things such as love or depression. It included giving what the characteristic looks, feels, smells, sounds, and tastes like. I did a good many of these, and even recently I have considered writing some more. This is probably my favorite short activity, and I will probably write more in the future because it is therapeutic to write about what heartbreak or childhood is like.

3.    A nice creative piece we did in class recently included making a poem out of words from another. I really enjoyed this because it was therapeutic to get it out of my system. I had gone into that class-period with a lot on my mind, and after writing this piece I feel like I got a lot of it out of my system and it gave me perspective on my own feelings. In other words, it gave me a chance to observe and figure out how I could make myself feel better. We have done many fun activities in class before, but this one really just came in at the perfect time.

2.     Name/discuss a couple of pieces you’ve read this quarter, including other classmates’ work and/or reading you’ve done in or out of class.

1.    In class we read different poems and songs to make our own pieces of writing, and I enjoyed making my own works using similar words as other authors. It really made me think about the different mindset that everyone has and how people’s minds go different ways when they approach the same words.

2.    I read a piece of writing by Trevor Cobb, called “Yellow Submarine.” I enjoyed reading this because it was clever, and we were talking about it for days. I remember texting Trevor later that night after we had written our scary stories, and even he was freaked out and could not sleep because of it. When I read it, I remember thinking about how it could really happen. And it’s the stories that can happen that get to you the most. Even now I think about being trapped in a submarine, and it is a scary thought—to be trapped in a place that nobody would ever think to look for you. This story stuck with me, and is probably one of my favorite writings by any of my classmates.

3.  Write about setting up your blog and what you have gotten from that experience. How did you come up with the name for your blog? Who do you think read it or who would you want to read it? Will you continue to use it on your own in the future? What kinds of things will you post?

Setting up my blog was a fun experience. From having a blog, I have gotten a unique way to share my writing with the class as a whole. It allowed me to get comments from other people, and it made it easy to share my writing with friends and family wherever I was because I could always just pull my phone out and show it to them. It was a great way to share things with the world, and it made me want to try harder—even if I knew that there really weren’t outsiders reading it. I came up with the name of my blog by using alliteration, and it just sounded catchy. Trevor followed in my footsteps when he did Trevor’s Terrific Tale (www.TrevorsTerrificTale.blogspot.com, or just click on the cat with the pizza on the left sidebar.), and after that it just seemed like an easy and fun way to come up with a name. My family and friends read it, especially when I wrote something I was proud of and would tell them to look up. My mom would get on and read things sometimes, and my friends would look up specific posts if I told them about it. That was my targeted audience, so it worked out nicely. I think I will continue to post on my blog every once and a while. I will probably post pictures I draw and maybe poems that I write if I get back into doing things like that. If I get inspired by a picture, I may try to write about it again.

4. Write about journaling. What kinds of things are in your journal? Who would you want to read it? Will you continue to journal? What will you write about?

I may still post things into my journal, at least until I fill up all of the pages. I think most of the entries will be old assignments we have done, but done differently. And I will probably try to do more magazine art. I have poems, collages, stories, and different kinds of art inside of my journal. I do not want anybody to read my entire journal, because some of the entries almost feel like they belong in a diary. Although most people would not know what inspired them or what they represent, it is scary to let anybody see it, just in case. I want to keep my journal forever. I want to be able to look back on it and maybe get inspired to do more creative writing.

5. Type an entry directly from your journal that you consider notable. It could be a paragraph or a page or so.

Depression…
…looks like my journal pages, words filling every space on the page.
…feels like a lump in my throat, and a weight on my heart.
…smells like the ‘willow scented’ hairspray I used in 8th grade.
…sounds like fast and silly music streaming through my headphones.
…tastes like salt after I cry “just one more time.”

6. Type or copy/paste a passage or section directly from one of your pieces of writing that you consider notable or your favorite that you’ve written. It could be a section or a page or so.

This is me and my brother Kylin,
learning how to play together before we could even walk;
becoming friends before we could even talk.

This is two life-long friends,
kept together by a friendship between two young women--
our moms.

This is two smiling babies,
without a single care in the world.

This is before the fighting, before the separation,
before the move. It is when life was simple. Without grades,
video-games, driver's licenses, heartbreak, hockey, debate, or even potty-training.

This is before life really started for the two of us,
before I was scared we would drift apart.

This is my one and only older brother,
maybe not by blood,
but by the time we have had together.
7. What creative writing do you plan to do in the future, if any? What do you get out of writing creatively? How does this differ from the other writing you do, in school and in life?

I plan to go back and maybe do an old assignment again, if I enjoyed it. An example would be writing a poem out of magazine letters. I really enjoyed doing pieces of writing stemming from other things. So I plan on doing that again.  When I write creatively, my writing comes more naturally and I tend to write things that I am proud of more often than I do when I write things for school or life (such as a college essay.) Writing creatively is much more therapeutic, and I usually feel better after getting things down on paper. I never knew what it could be like to write things that make me feel better until I learned all the different ways I could go about doing it that weren’t just poems.

8. Offer some final words of encouragement, appreciation, inspiration, etc. for your fellow writers you’ve worked with this quarter.

Trevor- I really enjoyed having this class with you and I think it might have been the perfect class to take together. I say this because I have always known what a great writer you are and I consider myself lucky to have been able to watch your thought process as you write and also to have inspired some of your pieces. (Cough cough, how about them airplanes?) You are my best friend, and please feel free to send me your creative pieces of writing any time. I think you will go far with your career in writing, and I am not just saying that because you’re my best friend. (Although, let’s be honest, I probably wouldn’t be telling you if we weren’t friends, because that might just be awkward.) Please come to Drury and make me more excited than I already am to go there.

Naomi- I am so glad I met you this semester, and I am going to miss you so much next semester and especially after this year when you go back to the Netherlands. It has been a pleasure creating so many memories with you, and I really hope we get to hang out outside of school before you leave! Your writing has always cheered me up, and you are definitely a very large reason as to why I loved Creative Writing so much.

Teyondra- I think I spelt that right! I loved making memories with you in Creative Writing, and I feel like I made another buddy to talk to after school. You are incredibly nice, and have made me laugh many times this year. You are a great writer, and I am always impressed by what you have done when you share it with the class. We should get together sometime just to hang out. You were so great to have in class, and I am very very glad that you came in and sat at our table on your first day. :)

9. Leave a comment on 3 of your classmate’s blogs.

Okie dokie then.

My Declaration of Intention

This year, I will focus on making myself happy by doing what I think is right and I will force myself to do things that cause me happiness in the end--even if it means putting in effort I do not want to use. I will let go of any negative thoughts I have about others or myself, as well as ignore the opinions and disheartening statements made by others. I will embrace new ideas and a positive attitude. I will be a better person when I start college than I was at the end of 2013. I will honor my decisions by listening to my brain, but not neglecting my heart, and love my life because I am doing my best. I will stand up & share my positive side with the world. This year, I will remember that I am loved and I am enough!

Poem Pieces

[Three days after my birthday I wanted you; in November I opened my heart to you. I spend too much time thinking about you. I want to forget that I met you. Because you're gone and I blame myself.]

This poem was pieced together by a poem (The Blue Dress, by Sharon Old) that Mrs. Fraser broke into pieces for us so we could make our own poem with them. Obviously, I used a few words of my own, but I really enjoyed the activity. Makes you think about how all words are are just that--words. They can be something great, something weak, and even when you use the exact same words it all depends on how you use them. Basically, it is how you use them, not which ones you use.

About a Boy Quote

"It happens, and I wish it didn't, but that's life, isn't it?"

I chose this quote because when I read it, I felt like it spoke to me. I think this is exactly what life is. Sometimes things happen and we are grateful, other times we are not so grateful. But whatever happens, we have to accept it. There is no way of changing the past regardless of if we want to or not. For example, I wish that I never lost any of my friends. Unfortunately, I cannot change that this happened. That is life. We accept what has happened and we move on. When I make friends with an old enemy, I am glad that it has happened and I cannot go back and change that. I accept the new reality. If I so please, I can try to reconnect with the old friend or I can try to make my new friend an enemy again. But this does not change the past, it is only changing the present. We must accept life, we do not really have a choice. Some things we can change for the present and the future, but the past cannot be altered. You cannot pretend you did not lose that friend for a period of time. You cannot change the fact that that this renewed enemy was once your friend. There are people in my life, maybe out of my life, that I wish had treated me differently. People that ignored my messages, people that made me feel used or worthless. I can choose to keep them out of my life now-- that is one of my choices now. However, I cannot go back and pretend they were never in my life. I cannot change the fact that I trusted them, change the fact that they hurt me. "It happens, and I wish it didn't, but that's life, isn't it?"

"Just Sit Down."

The red circle is where I was sitting!
*sitting on a bench in the west front entrance of the school*

Sitting on this bench in front of the school makes me feel nostalgic. It makes me think of how long I have gone to Kickapoo, and how different my life is now than it was when I first walked through these doors. From this spot I can see the spot I used to be dropped off at in the mornings. Where my dad would pick me up for orthodontist appointments sometimes. I see the parking spot of the drivers ed car, the first car I ever really drove. The front entrance of the school is to my left. I think about all the times I have walked through those doors. Sometimes I was sad, sometimes I was happy. This is the exact spot I was sitting on the last day of school a few years ago. The last student to leave the school. I have been here, in front of the school, in many types of weather. Sunny and hot, rainy, humid, snowy-- you name it. Today it is brisk outside. I enjoy it. The sky is gray with a little bit of pale blue peaking behind it. My favorite weather.

If...

13. If you had to name the most difficult thing about being a teenager today, what would you say?
It is hard to be a teenager because everyone expects you to act like an adult, but nobody wants to treat you like one.

16. If you could go back to one place in your life, where would you go?
I would go back to Saturday, November 30th, because my family was all together (unfortunately, excluding my little brother Patrick due to the fact that he had to go to work. :( ) in Branson. We were all getting along that day and had a lot of fun playing games and doing activities together. We decorated cookies, played Pacman, had Ping-Pong wars, Bingo, and even sang karaoke. We were not fighting, and even my mom was playing games and participating along with us. This does not happen very often, so it was a nice treat. I have to say this is one of my happiest memories in my life.

Lists of 12 on 12/2

12 Places I Want to Go and 2 People I Want to Take

1. Hawaii: I would take my godmother Wendy because she would be up to do fun things with me, but she would also force me to do or try things out of my comfort level. I would experience more if she was there. I would also take my friend Kailee because she would be fun to have around when hanging out on the beach or shopping.

2. Paris: I would take my friend Ronald with me. I say this because he knows some french, and he would be able to appreciate the museums and architecture as much as I would. I would also take my mother because she likes to learn and appreciate things like museums too, so I think she would enjoy going.

3. Venice: I want to go see Venice with Kailee because she and I have always had a dream of going there together and enjoying the boat rides and Italian food. If it were possible, I also would not mind taking Nancy Drew. She is always prepared and will surely always have an Italian-to-English dictionary.

4. Ireland: I would like to take my best friend Olivia with me to Ireland because I know her and I could have fun inside on a rainy day, and also because I know she would be up for exploring and learning when I wanted to. She would be fun to travel with. I also would take my brother Patrick, because he and I could have a fun time going to see castles and just enjoying the outdoors.

5. New York City: I would take Ronald and my sister Noelle with me to New York City. I say this, because Ronald knows the city and could show me around and tell me where all the best places to go are. I would take my sister Noelle with me because she would enjoy the shoppig and the city as much as I do.

6. Washington D.C.:  I have been here before, but I would go again with my my mom and step-dad. My step-dad is a political science professor, and he would do a good job at being a "personal tour guide." (As my mom put it when they went to D.C. for their honeymoon. :P) I would take my mother because like I said, she enjoys learning and museums as much as I do.

7. Hollywood: I would take my dad with me to Hollywood because he loves movies as much as I do, and it would be fun to see where some of our favorites were filmed and to learn more about film in general. I would also take my mom because she would enjoy taking tours with me and learning about them too.

8. Mexico: If I were to go to Mexico, I would have liked to take the young version of my black-grandma with me. She lived there, so she would be able to show me around and I could get a feel for Mexico in a non-touristy way. Also, I would like to take my brother. He would make a good body guard.

9. London: I would like to take Naomi and Kailee with me because Kailee has always wanted to go to England, and her and I would have fun talking to all the cute English boys. I would take Naomi because she has been before and could take us to all the places worth seeing.

10. The Gulf: I want to go back to the beach on the Gulf of Mexico. If I went back, I would like to take my mom and my dad's girlfriend, Amanda. I would take my mom because when we went to Perdido Key this summer she seemed to actually relax and enjoy watching the ocean. It made her happy. And I would take Amanda because she never gets a chance to relax. I think she would enjoy relaxing in the sand and playing in the water and shell searching with me.

11. Mall of America: I would love to go to the Mall of America with my sister and Jennifer Lawrence. I would take my sister because she is generally pretty good at telling me when I buy something ugly. Also, I would take Jennifer Lawrence because she could buy me things. And she is just about the coolest celebrity there is, in my opinion, and I think we would get along.

12. Hogwarts: I would take my BEST friend Trevor and Mrs. Bernskoetter with me because I know that they would enjoy the castle and witches and wizards as much as I would. Plus, we all know a little bit of spells and with our combined knowledge we will be on Professor McGonagall's good list.

1. Will Smith: Pursuit of Happyness, I am Legend.

Foodspiration

In my life, food is not simply a necessity, but a luxury too. Every Sunday since August of 2012, I go to my grandparents’ house to bake food with my grandma. In fact, we even started our own cookbook where we write down and rate the recipes of all the foods we make. Not surprisingly, out of every section--main dishes, salads, sides, miscellaneous, and desserts--desserts certainly have much more entries than any others. You can say my grandma and I kind of have a sweet tooth. The most popular item that we make is oyster crackers. These are no dessert, but they are eaten like candy by every person in our family. My grandma and I make these often because they never last long. They are cheap, easy to prepare, and maybe one of the most delicious snacks we know how to make. In our cookbook they are given 5 stars, hands-down. Here is the recipe for the snack that is in such high demand:

Ranch Flavored Oyster Crackers
2 bags of oyster crackers
1 cup of vegetable oil
1 package of ranch dressing mix
¼ tsp of garlic powder
½ - 1 tsp of dill weed
¼ tsp of lemon pepper

1.      In a small bowl (or measuring cup), combine the vegetable oil, ranch dressing mix, garlic powder, dill weed, and lemon pepper. Mix well so the ingredients do not fall to the bottom.
2.      In a gallon-sized Ziploc bag, pour the oil into the bag. Then, add the two bags of oyster crackers and close. Shake the bag, coating all the crackers in the oil evenly. Pour into a large baking pan.

3.      Place into oven at 275°, and bake for 15-20 minutes. Take out of oven and let them cool off until they are no longer as hot as lava.

4.      Hide as much as you can from your family, leave no evidence behind.

5.      Eat. Eat all of them.

6.   Repeat steps 1-5.
